Abstract

In Genzaburo Yoshino's masterpiece, How Do You Live?, fifteen-year-old Koperu navigates the complexities of pre-war Tokyo while grappling with the "big questions" of existence. As he encounters the harsh realities of social class, the weight of betrayal, and the sting of poverty, his uncle becomes a silent mentor, responding to Koperu’s experiences through a shared notebook. This dialogue transcends simple advice, evolving into a profound exploration of what it means to be a truly human member of a vast, interconnected society.
